About Milt GreekWhile attending college in the early and mid 1980s, Milt Greek developed paranoid schizophrenia. At first resistant and hostile to medical treatment, he recognized his need for medication in the spring of 1987. Once stabilized, Milt was able to finished degrees in Psychology and Sociology. However, with his instability casting a shadow over his college performance, he was unable to find work until he retrained in computer programming. He has been employed as a full time computer programmer since September of 1989. In 1996, Milt began a relationship with the woman who is now his wife, and with her support and understanding he has been able to understand the relationship between the delusions he experienced and his actual reality. In addition to his everyday activities, Milt has founded a schizophrenic peer support group and has volunteered with a couple of schizophrenics in acute psychosis to try to return the tremendous kindness and generosity of spirit that has made his new life possible. Milt began to speak on schizophrenia in 2001, and has developed a
guidebook (Schizophrenia: A Blueprint for Recovery) and a
series of talks detailing his understanding of schizophrenia. In 2007,
he delivered a series of six talks to mental health professionals on the
subject. In 2008, he spoke at the NAMI national conference in Orlando,
Florida and in 2009 he spoke at the NAMI Ohio conference in Columbus,
Ohio. |
